Root: A Game of Woodland Might and Right

Created by Leder Games

Root is a game of adventure and war in which 1 to 6 players battle for control of a vast wilderness. Root represents the next step in our development of asymmetric design. Like Vast: the Crystal Caverns, each player in Root has unique capabilities and a different victory condition. Now, with the aid of gorgeous, multi-use cards, a truly asymmetric design has never been more accessible. In Root, players drive the narrative, and the differences between each role create an unparalleled level of interaction and replayability. Leder Games invites you and your family to explore the fantastic world of Root!

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Backerkit Surveys!
over 6 years ago – Wed, Dec 20, 2017 at 10:49:11 PM

Hey everyone!

We’re really thankful for such a successful campaign and are really happy to say that BackerKit will be live soon! Don’t know what this is? BackerKit will help you maintain your address information and purchase additional copies or add-ons.

Emails inviting you to BackerKit should be in your inboxes over the next day or two. And please do not forget to check spam folders!

Late Orders

For those who had card difficulties or missed the initial campaign, you can now make your order on BackerKit. The GREAT news is that those who make late orders will ALSO be entitled to receiving the Riverfolk expansion with the core game of Root.

We take pride in not offering Kickstarter exclusive content and every upgrade and stretch goal unlocked from the campaign applies to all printed copies of Root.

When Will Pre-Orders Close?

Tentatively, we’re saying Tuesday, May 1st, 2018 is the deadline for late pledges.

Address changes will still be possible and we can always assist you up until we begin fulfillment.

Alliance Pledge Levels and Large Pledges

Retailers who backed at the Alliance Pledge and those with large pledges WILL NOT be receiving a BackerKit survey.

Your contact information has been recorded from Kickstarter and Clay from Sales will be contacting or has contacted you all individually for finalization of your orders.

New Large Pledges

We are limiting the amount of copies backers can purchase to 4 each. If you would like to purchase more than that, please email [email protected] and he’ll get you sorted out.

PNP Update

There will be a PNP update in late January. It will include changes to the factions (particularly, the Woodland Alliance is getting fixed).

It will also PROBABLY include: more Vagabonds, The Lizards, The Riverfolk, the second player board for the Vagabond and rules to support the second Vagabond.

Additional Questions

If there’s any questions not covered above, feel free to email us at [email protected] and Caryl would be happy to assist you!

Thanks and happy gaming!

PnP Rules Update
over 6 years ago – Fri, Dec 01, 2017 at 09:02:24 PM

Hi everyone,

We are back from the holidays and hard at work here at Leder Games. We’ve set up our development and testing schedule for the parts of the games that remain to be finished. Right now, it looks like in mid January we’ll be able to offer the next full print-and-play kit. This kit will have just about the full set of art and every faction. Till then, I’ve uploaded an updated set of rules that incorporates answers to many of the rules questions that have come up since we released this kit last month.

These rules can be found along with the rest of the print-and-play kit here: http://bit.ly/RootPrintandPlay

In addition to improvements in clarity, I’ve also made a few rulings in the interest of simplicity, clarity, and balance that do alter game play. I’ve listed them below for ease-of-reference:

1. VPs are awarded for the elimination of buildings (not wood).
2. The Marquise ignores the first hit in battles taking place at the keep.

Because we’re excited to get you all the next full print-and-play kit, today’s update only impacts the game’s rules. So, if there is any disagreement between a player board and these rules, the rules should be considered authoritative.

Support

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] and give us some time to get back to you. Caryl and I try to scan it during off hours, but we have lives too and cross-posting can really slow us down. In addition messaging system on KS is difficult to track, you will get a better response via email.

Late Backers

We will provide a means for Late Backers to pledge. Setting up Backerkit can be as time consuming as setting up a Kickstarter (maybe more so, it is very technical) and we want to research any addons we are going to add. Please be patient while we work on it.

Timeline

We will provide a timeline for additional PNP releases and how we will complete the project soon.

Outline

As we move forward I would like to present folks with an outline of the rule book as Cole and I dial in on how we will deliver on the content. This will help manage expectations about the content and scenarios.

Thank you update!

The end of the Root Kickstarter, getting back from an 8 day trip to PAX Unplugged, and Thanksgiving all met in one week. I am sorry I did not complete this update sooner. The convention was a lot of 12-14 hour days and I just needed to rest after a month of being sick and skipping sleep. Ask my employees I crashed a few times in the office even to maintain the pace we were on. So here we are a few days late with this update.

I was nervous about traveling during a Kickstarter campaign. I kept thinking that if the convention wasn’t helping the campaign or worse hurting it I would be stuck at the convention unable to help the campaign. Fortunately I think our presence at PAX: Unplugged and Cole’s presence at BGG CON helped a great deal. Even before the project hit the 48 hour mark we saw a noticeable uptick in pledges. At the conventions we all observed people pulling the game up on their phone and backing it at the table.

We cannot wait to get Root into your hands.

I would like to thank the following people:

The Backers - You are of course why I do this and why I am able to do this. Through your continued support my little company grows and I am able to bring joy to gamers around the world. I am grateful beyond measure as I continue to work with my creative team to bring innovation to gaming.

Content Creators - The reviews and how-to videos that were pulled together was very helpful for us to communicate with a large audience.

Cole Wehrle - I have never worked with another person that is so passionate about game design. He brought so much energy, focus, and creativity to the project.

Kyle Ferrin - Illustrator extraordinaire. He has breathed a great deal of life into this project with his drawing, his wit, and suggestions about world building.

I cannot stress how much Cole and Kyle worked to bring this project together. They did a fantastic job, far beyond expectations.

Joshua Yearsley - Provided us with constant editorial support. I am sure we made him sad several times at the pace we were changing things. Neat!

Jacob Tonding - He maintained the quotes to the printer and had a realistic handle on the prices. He is helping us keep on schedule. It is important work and we are optimistic about delivering on time this time out.

Clayton Capra - For wonderful convention support at PAX Unplugged as well as helping retailers.

Caryl Tan - For wonderful demos at PAX Unplugged and helping us keep support moving smoothly throughout the project.

Topher McCulloch - For his help with layout questions as they arose and I suspect his support when it comes time for the final layout of this project.

Playtesters - Cole had groups he communicated with regularly and we had an open house in the studio to play the game regularly. Your feedback has been helpful with the rapid pace we have been developing the game. I look forward to working with you more down the road.   I also would like to thank my own personal group of testers.

Thank you all very much, not in my wildest dreams did I expect the campaign to go so far.

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] and give us some time to get back to you. Caryl and I try to scan it during off hours, but we have lives too and cross-posting can really slow us down. In addition messaging system on KS is difficult to track, you will get a better response via email.

The End of the Beginning
over 6 years ago – Wed, Nov 22, 2017 at 12:16:56 AM

I keep trying to write this post. My wife keeps asking me how its going over there and I keep finding myself just surfing the net.

I will do longer and more specific thanks you tomorrow. Right now I am very tired after sprinting this project for the month and being on the road the last week to present Root at PAX: Unplugged.

I really want to thank you the backers for helping us get the word out, your suggestions, and of course for backing our project. Due to you I can make a beautiful game. I am delighted by your warmth, positivity, and encouragement. Thank you all.

I also really want to thank my team for carrying us through the project and delivering us to the other side. I feel really good about bringing people together as we move forward into the future. We will celebrate a bit in the office on Monday but for now we are going to enjoy some time with our families.

I am going to get some sleep and try to finish off this cold finally. We have a lot to work to in the coming months to keep the game on schedule and deliver on our mandate. I will need my strength.

Thank you!

Patrick Leder
